At the University of Kiel, he earned his doctoral degree researching Platinum-Rhodium-alloys in 1997. In his first commercial career at Lilly Germany, he was responsible for multiple successful product launches within the Diabetes Care product lines including insulin and insulin pens. In 2001, he initiated a project for the oncology business unit of Lilly Germany creating and launching a 2-year development plan for key opinion leaders. As a Sales Trainer at Lilly Germany, he customized and led the sales representative training program, adding mentorship and enthusiasm through the representative-initiated performance metrics. Christian’s approach to training resulted in him becoming the contact person for Lilly’s Global Sales Training department in Indianapolis, US and he became known for his exceptional scientific, sales, and leadership trainings, globally. In 2004, Christian took on the role of Diabetes Product Manager at Berlin-Chemie AG, the German daughter of the Menarini Group. Building on a passion for a better device, Christian and his team of 120 revolutionized the marketing of blood glucose meters by fostering engaged, data- driven dialogues, and by bringing together product development teams, patient priorities, and prescriber needs. His collaborative approach to sales and development extended to product managers beyond the diabetes group, to encourage new thinking about ‘old problems’. Together with the Diabetes Academy Bad Mergentheim, he developed a new patient training program “HyPOS” for patients with hypoglycaemia unawareness, which was celebrated by patients and health care providers as transforming outcomes. Continuous glucose measurement was an emerging topic, and as the Group Product Manager Christian represented Germany at the marketing headquarters in Florence beginning deeper collaborations with health policy interest associations. The growing visibility resulted in a new opportunity in 2011 as a Business Unit Manager for Animas (a Johnson & Johnson Company). In cross functional cooperation with the extended family of Johnson & Johnson companies, Christian built the new insulin pump business unit in Germany. His Sales and Marketing team launched several innovative products, recognized as meaningful by patients, providers, payers, and industry. As a member of the EMEA Management Board he represented of Animas at the Diabetes technology working group of the German Diabetes Association (DDG). Furthermore, he was responsible for successful negotiations with payers to secure reimbursement and prepare rebate contracts. As CEO of Emperra E-Health Technologies, since 2014, Christian combines his proven record of success in product launch with distinctive regulatory, production, and market expertise from Big Pharma to support the achievement of reimbursement in less than 2 years. His broad diabetes network consisting of diabetes companies, health insurer, physicians and nurses helped him to raise the awareness of this digital diabetes start-up. In negotiations with health insurers he continues a visionary approach to fees for eHealth services, beyond pure hardware reimbursement. In collaborations with pharma companies, Christian sees pay for performance and pay for results based business models as the future of IT and MedTech companies like Emperra. Firm Profile Emperra GmbH E-Health Technologies is a research- and development-driven medical-device company from Potsdam, Germany, that offers innovative concepts and solutions in the fields of ehealth technology and tele- diabetology. Emperra combines innovative software with ground- breaking hardware and integrates these into a medical and scientific concept aimed at providing doctors, patients, carers and relatives with telemedicine-based product systems. The data is stored in encrypted form on highly secure servers which satisfy the strictest IT security standard in accordance with ISO / IEC 27001:2013. In a field trial carried out in collaboration with a health insurance provider, the ESYSTA® system was tested in everyday practice situations on over 200 insulin-dependent diabetics. Summary: Over a period of twelve months, a mean reduction in the HbA1c value of 0.9% points was achieved without any increase in the number of hypoglycaemic episodes.
